Learning a new language involves not just understanding grammar and vocabulary but also mastering expressions that convey nuances in communication. In Spanish, phrases like "A mí también," "Yo también," "A mí tampoco," "Yo tampoco," "A mí sí," "Yo sí," "A mí no," and "Yo no" are crucial for expressing agreement, disagreement, and other feelings. So let's see them and understand when and how to use them!! 🥰
After reading this easy explanation, practice Spanish with me in this video and share with me what you like or don't like!
Let's study Spanish together!
🗝️AGREEING IN AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES
"A Mí También" and "Yo También"
Use these phrases when you want to agree with someone in affirmative sentences.
"A mí también" is used when you want to say, "Me too" or "I also agree." But only when it's used with verbs like: "gustar" or "encantar". In other words, verbs that need the pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les). For example:
-"Me gusta correr por el parque" | +¡A mí también! | -"I love running in the park" +"So do I" / "Me too" |
-"Me encanta la pizza" | +¡A mí también! | -"I love pizza" +"So do I" / "Me too" |
-"Me interesan las películas de ciencia ficción" | +¡A mí también! | -"I'm interested in sci-fi movies" +"So do I" / "Me too" |
"Yo también" is the same but it's used with the rest of the verbs (cocinar, hacer, ir, querer, correr, odiar, ...). Basically, verbs that don't require the pronoun. For example:
-Hago yoga por las mañanas. | +¡Yo también! | -"I do yoga in the mornings" +"So do I" / "Me too" |
-Cocino todas las noches. | +¡Yo también! | -"I cook every night". +"So do I" / "Me too" |
-Estudio mucho español. | +¡Yo también! | -"I study Spanish a lot". +"So do I" / "Me too" |
The trick is that...
when you are talking about likes and dislikes and you need to use the pronoun (me...) with the verb (gusta, encanta...), you need to say: "A mí también." If you are using another verb that doesn't require the pronoun, you just say "Yo también".
💖Good news is that if you got this, it is the same for the rest of the phrases! 🥰
🗝️AGREEING IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES
"A Mí Tampoco" and "Yo Tampoco"
These expressions are used when you want to express disagreement or a lack of agreement in a negative sentence.
"A mí tampoco" is equivalent to saying, "Me neither" or "I don't agree either" in NEGATIVE sentences that used verbs like "gustar, encantar, interesar..."
-"No me gusta el fútbol" | +"A mí tampoco" | -"I don't like football". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
-"No me asustan las películas de miedo". | +"A mí tampoco" | -"I'm not afraid of scary movies". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
-"No me gusta la lluvia" | +"A mí tampoco" | "I don't like the rain". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
"Yo tampoco" is used in negative sentences and it is the same as "a mí tampoco" but you will use it with verbs that do NOT need a pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les). Basically, any other verb. 😎
+"No suelo desayunar" | -"Yo tampoco" | -"I don't usually have breakfast". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
+"No quiero ir al cine" | -"Yo tampoco" | -"I don't want to go to the cinema". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
+"No voy al gimnasio hoy" | -"Yo tampoco" | "I'm not going to the gym today". / "Me neither" / "Neither do I". |
🗝️ DISAGREEING IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES
🕵️♂️Note!!! When you use "a mí sí", "yo sí", "a mí no", "yo no" can sound impolite (it depends on the person you are speaking to). These expression are way more straightforward and direct!
"A Mí Sí" and "Yo Sí":
These phrases are employed to make emphasis in your opinion or preference. You don't agree, you are making clear that you do like that thing or that you actually do that action. So you will use "a mí sí" and "yo sí" when the other person is saying that they don't like or do something (but you do!).
-"No me gusta bailar" | +"A mí sí" | -"I don't like dancing" / "I do" |
-"No me interesa estudiar español" | +"A mí sí" | -"I am not interested in studying Spanish" / "I am" |
-"Yo no hago la cama por las mañanas" | +"Yo sí" | -"I don't make the bed in the mornings" / "I do" |
-"Yo no estudio español" | +"Yo sí" | -"I don't study Spanish" / "I do" |
🗝️DISAGREEING IN AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES
"A Mí No" and "Yo No":
These work the other way around! These phrases are also employed to make emphasis in your opinion or preference. You don't agree, but now you are making clear that you do NOT like that thing or that you actually do NOT do that action. So you will use "a mí no" and "yo no" when the other person is saying that they do like or do something (but you don't!).
-"Me gusta beber café por la mañana" | +"A mí no" | -"I like drinking coffee in the morning" / "I don't" |
-"Me interesa ver documentales" | +"A mí no" | -"I am interested in watching documentaries" / "I am not" |
-"Quiero ir al norte de España" | +"Yo no" | -"I want to go to North Spain" / "I don't" |
-"Voy a la playa en verano" | +"Yo no" | -"I go to the beach in summer" / "I don't" |
😊
Mastering these expressions will enhance your ability to engage in conversations with native Spanish speakers, providing you with the tools to express agreement, disagreement, affirmation, and negation effectively. Practice using these phrases in various contexts to become more comfortable and confident in your Spanish communication skills. ¡Buena suerte! (Good luck!)
