Is it a masculine or feminine noun? Introduction to Spanish genders

¡Hola estudiantes! Welcome to the exciting journey of learning Spanish! Today, we're talking about Spanish genders. I have students that have a really good level in Spanish, yet they make mistakes in the gender agreement.

Before we start...

- What is a noun in Spanish?

In Spanish, a noun is a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns in Spanish, like in many languages, can be either concrete (such as "casa" for house) or abstract (such as "amor" for love). One significant feature of Spanish nouns is that they have gender, being classified as either masculine or feminine.

- What is "gender agreement"?

Gender agreement is when articles, adjectives, and pronouns, match the gender of the noun they are modifying in a sentence. Basically, the noun is the most important thing in the sentence and everything else has to be friends with it (verbs follow different rules!). In languages with grammatical gender, like Spanish, it's crucial for these elements to agree in gender with the noun for the sentence to be grammatically correct!!

For example: The girl is beautiful. We have an article (the, which is "la" because "girl" is feminine in Spanish) and then we have an adjetive (beautiful, which would be "bonita" or "guapa", ending in -a because "girl" is feminine in Spanish!).

The girl is beautiful = La niña es guapa.
